The Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association (CAZOVA), led by President Mushtaque Mohammed, together with its Executive Committee and the wider Caribbean volleyball community, extends its heartfelt condolences on the passing of distinguished Cuban volleyball coach Juan Carlos Gala.
Coach Gala devoted his life to the advancement of volleyball, earning widespread respect for his commitment to athlete development and his lasting contributions to the sport in Cuba, the Caribbean, and beyond.
His impact on Caribbean volleyball was especially significant during his tenure in Trinidad and Tobago from 2002 to 2004 as a development coach. Under his leadership, the national programme made remarkable progress, rising from the lower ranks to a fourth-place regional finish while establishing a stronger culture of discipline, preparation, and high-performance training. The foundation he helped build played an important role in Trinidad and Tobago’s continued growth as one of the Caribbean’s leading volleyball nations today.
Working alongside fellow Cuban coach Ana Maria, Coach Gala also partnered with the Ministry of sport to strengthen youth volleyball development. Their efforts included organizing training camps in Cuba, providing young Trinidad and Tobago athletes with valuable international exposure and advanced technical instruction that contributed significantly to the country’s long-term player development.
Remembered for his professionalism, discipline, and passion for teaching, Coach Gala inspired countless athletes, coaches, and administrators throughout his career. His influence extended far beyond match results, leaving a lasting legacy through the people he mentored and the programmes he helped develop.
